Outstanding craftsmanship combined with quiet efficiency distinguishes this exceptional Georgian physicians cabinet. Crafted of rich mahogany and resembling a musicians tripod stand, this cabinet provides ample room for storage in a small, well-ordered space. With canted writing surfaces on the front and back, the cabinet features hinged doors on each side which open to reveal a fitted interior with drawers and pigeonholes, one end with a pullout slide with a shallow bleeding bowl. Candle platforms on all four corners are fitted to hold four white metal candlesticks for maximum lighting, and a turned stem with three cabriole legs and pad feet comprise the sturdy base. Medicine underwent vast changes in the 18th and 19th centuries. As people began to move from small villages to crowded urban centers, many died from diseases such as cholera, tuberculosis, measles and pneumonia infections that could spread quickly and easily thanks to living in dirty, overcrowded conditions with poor sanitation and unclean drinking water. However, understanding of the body also greatly increased during this time, and with it, great advances in medicine, such as vaccination and microbiology, blossomed. Physicians were much better equipped to treat disease and items like this remarkable cabinet were essentials tools in their arsenal.
