What’s an estimate of how much these 2 room-make-over items would cost?
I’m make-ing over my bedroom a bit. What we are going to do is, because of the small size, putting the TV in the unused closet (as opposed to against a wall in the room). We’d like the cabinet to fill the entire space of the closet, except for an inch or so on each side so that the cabinet doors can slide against the sides of the cabinet when the cabinet is open. The TV cabinet should either have 2 or 4 doors. The top section of the cabinet will be a large open space in which we’ll put the TV, and the bottom portion will have 3 shelves in it for DVD/such storage. Anyway, we are also going to convert my bed into a daybed so that viewing the TV will be very comfortable. We don’t need the daybed railing unless necessary. Here’s the list of what we’ll need:
Custom TV cabinet (w = 45", h = 78", d = 24")
Daybed cushions (enough to cover the wall of 83" and possibly the head/foot board things of 42")
A custom cabinet could really up the price, are you sure that there is nothing that you could use that is more off the peg. Customising anything adds a lot to the price.
Have you had a look at http://www.storageboxesworld.com. They have absolutely beautiful storage stuff including closet storage and tv stands etc.
The daybed idea sounds great, but again, if I were you I would search for ready made cushions to fit. Good Luck!
Unfinished furniture: staining vs. painting?
We purchased a lot of unfinished wood furniture for our home office. Basically desks, filing cabinets, drawers and large Storage Cabinets that will line 2 walls of the room. We have hardwood red oak floors in the room.
My question is, should we paint it or stain it? Originally we planned on staining it, but are having issues with doing that ourselves. I always thought painting wood furniture was only for junky old furniture you got at garage sales, but my husband thinks it might look nice.
Any opinions?
If the furniture is a nice hard wood, I would not paint it. If it’s pine, you can paint or stain. Remember if you plan on staining a soft wood like pine, use a pre-conditioner to prevent the soft wood from absorbing too much stain and coming out with a darker tone than you expect.
What examples from the past are good common sense to fight the "war on drugs"?
On the lighter side, I’d say keeping drugs out of the hands of the Dallas Police Dept.
While making room to create a more efficient evidence storage room, they shipped off old cabinets to be sold at a office supply outlet. One cabinet happened to contain 128 sealed packages of seized drugs ranging from marijuana, heroine, methamphetamine, and cocaine. — Can we all say, "Oops! My bad."
(Dallas police mistakenly send 123 bags of illegal drugs to store) http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/yahoolatestnews/stories/DN-drugsfound_17met.ART.State.Edition1.4ba5782.html?so=TimeStampAscending&ocp=4#slcgm_comments_anchor
On a serious note, I think raising our children in an atmosphere of compassion, understanding & clear parental guidance would curb a lot of the desire for child to want to alter their reality B4 they even know what reality is.
Secondly, they should be supplied with factual information about drugs., i.e. "Yes, they can make you feel good, but while staying in that ‘feel good’ place, you will never learn how to handle the hard problems in life that don’t feel good. But you need to learn these skills to get past your problems so that the problem is GONE and not waiting to kick you in the butt again b/c you never learned how to cope with real life in the1st place."
What are other ideas? Either on the home front or in society?
Singapore death penalty sounds a bit harsh. Especially if a person just bought a new filing cabinet on sale without first looking through all of the drawers. – LOL
The so called "War on Drugs" is nothing but a dog and pony show from the US government. The small time dealers are sent to prison for years, but their suppliers are "unknown" and not prosecuted. Oh, wait, they are most likely illegal immigrants and… I’ll stop right there.
Parents and grands need to keep up, or sometimes look back on what they did to get that OTC high. Look for those signs in your children or grands. How much cough syrup does one teen need? How much hairspray does that girl need? How much do you need to clean your keyboard with those five cans of "air"? The thing is, if you don’t speak up with the truth from your own experiences, then how can anyone learn from it!?
