how to paint composite wood?
I own black-finish furniture. I’ve been searching for a storage cabinet under $70 with a similar dark finish but have been unable to do so – and a storage cabinet that would completely fit my needs has shown up at Wal-Mart, on sale for 40% off.
However, it is a light oak finish.
How can I paint this composite wood to give it a faux black wood finish? I want the faux grain appearance and I know I won’t get it if I just bought black paint and painted it with a normal paintbrush.
Here is the product –

I’m not sure this would be strong enough to handle sanding….
Sure. But, without seeing the type of faux, I really can’t help.
What I’d do (the price is GREAT) is sand it lightly, prime it, and paint it the main color you want.
Then I’d go to PAINT store, NOT HOME DEPOT OR LOWE’S and buy a graining tool. They are easy to use, but you do need to practice. Ask the customer service person any questions you may have. If you want a "wood" grain, that’s the tool.
opinions on decoration a playroom?
I am gutting my garage and making it into a playroom for my 1 and 3 year old boys. i am basically working with a blank palate. I love those cute cabinets with the cube storage. I saw this one at ikea and have basically decided to go with it. It is the dark wood and I lile dark wood for a boys space. I am trying to decide on a color that is fun but will look good with dark wood. I am driving myself crazy looking at HGTV all day. Any color ideas?
For boys, you can never go wrong with blue. As they are very little, you can try a powerful blue. I don’t think dark wood can contribute to child’s imagination as a lively color (blue, green, red, yellow).
Be careful with the cabinets and check their corners (some of them are really sharp, and rough).
You can also try adding some swinging horses and other kind of swings. Your boys will love them, and not just for the moment.
Also, you can add blackboards on your walls to provide them some drawing spaces.
i need to remodel a house on a budget. any ideas?
we are putting down new laminate hardwood floors and carpet. we need to get all new cabinets and appliances, we need furniture and storage. and we are remodeling the bathrooms. any ideas on how to do this the cheapest way possible? we definately need storage for the playroom. and its a 3 bed, 2 bath. light wood paneling all throughout and red brick fireplace and brick all over that wall..
Make sure you plan well for the project. Nothing hits the bottom line of a project more than poor planning and "surprises" during the remodel. I wrote a free e-book available here:

I recommend downloading a copy to start out in the right direction.
Good luck with your project!
