Particle Board Shelf (PLEASE HELP)?

I was looking at some nice media Storage Cabinets on Amazon and some people were saying they were bad because they use particle board for the shelves.

I was thinking, if all it is holding is game and movie cases, it’s not going to mess it up. They are extremely light and even if a shelf is filled up they shouldn’t do any damage.

So if all your putting on them is dvd cases, ps3 cases, blu-ray cases and cd cases, is it safe to say that nothing will happen to them because of that?

Particle board is simply glued together sawdust. It has no structural integrity, warps easily, and comes apart in humid conditions. For the uses you describe, it will probably work fine. But if you can afford real wood, that’s the way to go.

It should be fine. Just don’t overload past the recommended weight limit. The only problem is if you live in a a humid environment they will eventually sag like mine did.

Particle board will be ok if it is NEVER moved. It cannot withstand much vibration, and taking the screws out more than once or twice. It will swell if it gets wet, and sometimes in areas of high humidity. It will completely disintegrate if it gets wet more than once.
I bought this stuff when I was young and broke, but once you can get something else, dont do it.

For light storage they will work fine. As you increase the weight you will have to reinforce the shelves. Take a moment and look at how the shelves are attached to the sides, the more points of contact the better! The thickness and density of the wood is important too.
